Intact carboxysomes in a cyanobacterial cell visualized by hilbert differential contrast transmission electron microscopy.
Carboxysomes in rapidly frozen ice-embedded whole cells of the cyanobacterium Synechococcus sp. strain PCC 7942 were visualized by the recently developed Hilbert differential contrast transmission electron microscope. Structural details of carboxysomes were especially clearly visualized in the ruptured cells. The novel electron microscopy exhibited the paracrystalline arrays of molecules of the...
متن کاملCold-stable microtubules from Antarctic fishes contain unique alpha tubulins.
The cytoplasmic microtubules of Antarctic fishes assemble from their tubulin subunits at physiological body temperatures in the range -2 to +2 degrees C. Our objective is to determine the structural features that enhance the assembly of Antarctic fish tubulins at low temperatures. Here we compare the structures of tubulin subunits from three Antarctic fishes (Notothenia gibberifrons, Notothenia...
متن کاملDrosophila nucleosomes contain an unusual histone-like protein.
Mononucleosomes prepared from Drosophila melanogaster nuclei contain the four core histones H2A, H2B, H3, and H4 plus an additional histone-like, acid-soluble, chromosomal protein. It is probably the protein designated D2 by Alfageme et al. [Alfageme, C.R., Zweidler, A., Mahowald, A. & Cohen, L.H. (1974) J. Biol. Chem. 249, 3729-3736]. D2 elutes with histone H2A from a Bio-Gel P-100 column, but...
متن کاملDeoxyribonucleic acid in Nitrobacter carboxysomes.
Carboxysomes were isolated from Nitrobacter winogradskyi and Nitrobacter agilis. The icosahedral particles contained double-stranded deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). In the presence of ethidium bromide and cesium chloride, the particle-bound DNA had a buoyant density of rho 25 = 1.701 g/cm3. Electron microscopy revealed the DNA to be a 14-micron circular molecule.
متن کاملDo cyanobacterial lipids contain fatty acids longer than 18 carbon atoms?
Fatty acids of twelve species of cyanobacteria grown under different photoautotrophic conditions were studied and their composition was compared with literature data of many other species. We have come to the conclusion that the lipids of cyanobacteria do not contain fatty acids with a chain longer than 18 carbon atoms. In our opinion, omission of an analytical procedure, i.e. purification of f...
